Their Interests Are Not Aligned with Yours

wolf in sheep's clothing

So how would you know that you’re working with one of Canada’s Top Wealth Advisors? The Globe and Mail in partnership with SHOOK Research purports to tell you who the top wealth advisors are…but their ranking measures are what is good for the advisor and the firm, NOT what is good for their clients. Their “research” is manipulation masquerading as truth.

These rankings are very amusing and disturbing at the same time.

Look at this silliness from The Globe and Mail. From Canada’s Top Wealth Advisors  2021 list:

“In partnership with SHOOK Research, we present a first-ever list of the country’s most effective financial advisors.” (Again, I caution you to consider effective for whom…)

OUR METHODOLOGY

“Canada’s Top Wealth Advisors ranking was developed by SHOOK Research and is based on in-person, virtual and telephone due diligence meetings and a ranking algorithm that includes client retention, industry experience, review of compliance records and firm nominations. Quantitative criteria include assets under management and revenue generated for their firms.

Investment performance is not a criterion because client objectives and risk tolerances vary, and advisors rarely have audited performance reports. (Isn’t that what you are paying for???)

SHOOK’s research and rankings provide opinions intended to help investors choose the right financial advisor and are not indicative of future performance or representative of any one client’s experience. Past performance is not an indication of future results. Neither The Globe and Mail nor SHOOK Research receive compensation in exchange for placement on the ranking. Minimum account sizes are general since they can vary depending on a range of circumstances. Advisors are judged on individual performance, but total team assets are shown, which can include one or more additional advisors.” (Making the ranking meaningless because you have no idea how many advisors are represented)

For more information, please see www.SHOOKresearch.com. SHOOK is a registered trademark of SHOOK Research, LLC.

The insanity continues around the criteria used to determine the country’s “most effective financial advisors.” In my view, SHOOKS’s methodology is nonsense and completely flawed. “Quantitative criteria include assets under management and revenue generated for their firms”. That’s just plain crazy talk. In the real world there is no connection between assets under management and revenue generated for their firms and the effectiveness of financial advisors from their clients’ point of view. Their criteria for making the list has absolutely nothing at all to do with the clients’ experience, service levels, client goal achievement, getting the clients ‘entire financial house in order, the client actualizing their ideal financial future, the client living a better life or any other measure important to clients.

All the metrics in the rankings are about the advisor’s ability to gather assets and generate revenue for their firms which has nothing to do with client outcomes…meaning that the advisors on this list are the top salespeople in the industry, not the investment advisors who are serving their clients at the highest levels. The reality is that as they add more clients and assets, their time available to serve each client declines. Remember, if they don’t sell you investment products, they don’t get paid and no revenue is generated for their firms.

Shouldn’t Canada’s Top Wealth Advisors list be comprised of the advisors that are delivering the most value to YOU the client?

Advisors should be ranked by the quality of the client experience, the client achieving their financial goals or the client getting their entire financial house in order. Their fees should include things like creating an overarching financial strategy, creating a separate plan for every client goal, tracking client progress on each goal and alerting clients whenever they are off-track to their goals, making course corrections, ensuring that wills, trusts and estate plans are in place and are funded (50% of trusts are never funded). It should also include tax planning and preparation to ensure that taxes are minimized, annual insurance audits and adjustments, and most importantly, ensuring that the client is actualizing their ideal financial future and living a better life.

What would you call a person whose job it is to sell products on which they make a commission?

If you said salesperson, you would be correct. It might say “Wealth Manager” or “Financial Advisor” or even “Trusted Advisor” on their business card, but you must learn to ignore those misleading titles and the “national brands” and “trusted institutions” they represent. These are the tools of distraction and misdirection!

When do these salespeople have time to serve their clients if gathering more Assets Under Management (AUM) is their highest priority? As a consumer, aren’t you curious about how much value they actually provide to the CLIENT?

The financial services industry views success as Assets Under Management (AUM). Bigger is always better. The scary part is many consumers support the madness because they just don’t know better. Advisors say this aligns their interests with yours, but it’s just a commission, plain and simple. So the more assets they gather, the greater their commissions. If they get a 2% commission and your portfolio drops by $100,000, what is your loss? What is their loss? I don’t think I would characterize that as “aligned.”

High-earning professionals and business owners are sitting ducks for private banks, wealth management firms, and investment brokers with posh-sounding names and offices. They are fooled and hypnotized by their flashy fabricated titles like “First Vice-President, Portfolio Manager, and Investment Advisor.”

It’s nice to feel important and be approached. Perhaps it helps us feel like we’ve “made it”. These businesses aren’t interested in creating a long-term investment strategy and helping you stick with it. They’re interested in flogging you an in-house investment portfolio stuffed full of hidden fees with no performance guarantees.

So, it’s likely you get a cookie-cutter approach that any logical, academic, independent analysis would utterly destroy. You’re being fed great sales and marketing at a very high cost.

It’s strange that so many professionals value professional independence and fiduciary duties but fail to apply the same rigor when taking advice on their own finances. Rather than seek out advisors who work as a fiduciary, they accept the vast majority who operate with lower suitability standards.

But, what about the perks??

That complimentary invitation to the prestigious sporting event simply isn’t worth the years of extra work that will be required for you to reach your goals because of excessive fees.

Smoke and Mirrors

Time and time again when I interview new clients all they have ever received from many of the so-called reputable firms and advisors was “money management” and possibly a few other peripheral services of little value. There are generally discussions around the markets, economy or the world – all things that the advisor has absolutely no control over… but which the advisor pretends to know how to manage.

As a result. there is a lot of smoke and mirrors, classic sales tactics (selling fear and greed), inaccurate crystal ball forecasting and industry jargon. Remember, first and foremost they are paid to sell products. As a result, the only service provided is them selling you an in-house investment portfolio stuffed full of hidden fees. Even if they do happen to beat the market, you likely still lose after deducting fees.

Can you trust the biggest institutions?

Another real concern is that many consumers have a false sense of security when they trust large well-known institutions. Investors simply assume with confidence that they are in good hands. They believe they have added protection because they are working with a big brand name institution. These beliefs could not be farther from the truth. These institutions simply have massive marketing budgets and distribution. None of that means they have your back.

Titles Mean Nothing

There are a lot of titles in the marketplace – Senior Vice President, Senior Investment Advisor, financial advisor, financial planner, wealth manager, private banker, private wealth etc. There is no standard definition of what these terms definitively mean and /or a standard requirement of what should be provided to a client. The reality is these titles are meaningless marketing.

You might be asking yourself, “Where do I find the right Financial Consultant near me who charges a flat fee and will treat me fairly?” “Where can I find an Advisor who can create an Integrated Aligned Overarching Strategy?” or “Where can I find an advisor who will only invest my money in proven passive investments? We suggest that you interview several. You’ll quickly learn that there are very few who are fiduciaries, believe in passive investing and have a process to create an Integrated Aligned Overarching Strategy. When you do find the right advisor, you’ll be able to relax in the knowledge that you are in the right hands and that your financial future is secure. Feel free to reach out to me with your questions. I’m committed to investor education.

Does thinking about money make you tense? If you have ever wondered what would happen if you lost your job tomorrow or how to best optimize your finances, then you are not alone. A recent study shows 66% of Canadians feel financially unwell or just okay. Research shows there is a strong link between how financially well we feel, and our mental and physical health. Canadians who feel financially unwell are nearly 5 times less likely to participate in healthy physical activity and are more likely to experience financial stressors. On the flipside, Canadians who feel financially well are significantly more likely to say their physical health is excellent or good. They get more exercise, they eat more fruits and vegetables, they get health checkups more regularly and educate themselves on being healthier. Most importantly, they are less likely to worry about finances or stress over managing their money. Good financial habits can help improve our physical and emotional health. Here are some ideas to get you started: Ask for help, get perspective and take control. Everyone runs into significant financial issues in their lives. It could be sudden job loss, an inheritance, divorce, financial independence, severance, major purchases, purchase or sale of a business, excessive investment fees, couples not agreeing on financial issues or anything else that keeps you up at night. People often keep such problems to themselves. Talking things through with people who listen without judgment can lead to new solutions. More importantly, it’s a stress reliever. A personal financial crisis can feel like the end of the world, but the consequences generally aren’t life-and-death. What’s the worst that can happen? The answer may be a significant lifestyle change, such as downsizing into a different home, decreasing car payments and dramatically reducing expenses. I like to call this rightsizing your lifestyle. My advice is stop trying to keep up with the Joneses. If you look at the statistics, the Joneses are broke and faking it while racking up huge credit card debt. Build a “REAL” financial strategy. The most effective solution to financial stress is to create an Aligned Comprehensive Written Lifetime Financial Strategy. This strategy goes way beyond traditional retirement planning, money management or wealth management. Imagine, for the first time, experiencing a one-of-a-kind process that fully integrates and aligns your most important goals (financial and non-financial), with your most deeply held values (the people and things that are most important to you) and then determines how your finances should be arranged to optimize your fulfilment and enjoyment of life. Imagine the peace of mind & simplicity you will enjoy with an integrated, aligned overarching strategy for every area of your financial life (including banking, budgeting, bill paying, auto and other major purchases, financial and retirement planning, insurance, accounting and tax minimization, investments and money management, estate planning and more) all integrated into a single strategy that assures that you will achieve your ideal life goals in significantly less time than other methods. Never forget that your money is there to support the accomplishment of your Ideal Life. That’s why we start with a solid Ideal Life design planning process and keep working until you have a crystal-clear path to your Ideal Future. Then we go to work on how to support it financially. Money comes last… Remember, money is a tool that supports the accomplishment of your values and goals. The traditional financial services industry provides endless tactics that are typically tied to products pushed by salespeople in the wealth management industry. They try to distract you by comparing products against other products or the market. That’s all nonsense. Focus on the things that are firmly within your control. And remember that all those big brand name institutions you have grown to trust are ONLY paid if they sell you a product. What people need to become wealthy and stress free is a FLAT- FEE for advice FIDUCIARY who creates an Aligned Comprehensive Written Lifetime Financial Strategy. This is a living document that is adjusted frequently as your life changes. It is a prioritized step-by-step written plan of action. It outlines your current reality and clarifies whether you are on track or off track to your Ideal Life goals. It highlights actionable items and course corrections allowing you to actualize your ideal financial future. Just like your health, you cannot have a one-time checkup or plan with your doctor and expect your health to magically stay on track. With a well-designed financial strategy in place, it becomes possible to lower your stress and live into your Ideal Life vision TODAY…despite what is happening in the world… not in some imaginary future. It becomes possible to shift your mental energy away from financial issues and towards what matters most to you in life. Let me show you how we can make it happen. Consider the possibilities...What would you do with extra free time every month? What would you do with an extra decade free of financial cares? Note: This may be the most important paragraph in this article: What is the scarcest commodity on Planet Earth? It is not gold or diamonds or money. It is TIME! Time is what we all have too little of, yet we are willing to squander precious YEARS of it NOT achieving our goals because we are simply too lazy to do our homework on our financial lives and the advisors we choose. This is an enormous waste of human potential. You can be living Your Ideal Life much sooner than you imagine, but you must take action right now to get it on track. The ultimate goal of this entire process is to enable you to be FREE to use your precious time in the ways that you choose on your most important priorities. The definition of true wealth is complete control over your time. Money is just an enabler of that control. Our job is to ensure you have all the money you need to live life exactly as you choose. The outcome is people are much calmer due to a newfound confidence in their future, always knowing if they are on track or off track and making course corrections to achieving each of their goals. They are actively focused on living their values and living into their Ideal Lives right now. If you are ready to get really serious about living your Ideal Life and getting your financial house in perfect order, please call me a t 403-543-7226 or email me at dean@ideal-life-experience.ca to get started. I look forward to working with you to reach all of your goals. The Goal Setting System Goal setting is an essential part of living life to the fullest. Goals give our lives purpose, meaning, direction, and keep us grounded and focused. They help increase our motivation and help us fulfill our desires in life. Top athletes, people in the business world, and anyone who is successful sets goals daily. Sometimes, people fail to reach their goals because they become distracted with everyday life or lack the motivation and drive to follow through on their commitments. To help you with those issues, I want to share with you my specific goal setting system to overcome inertia. It doesn’t matter if your goal is to run a marathon or save up enough money to travel around Europe, the process is the same. Once you master it, you will be unstoppable. STEP #13: Reward yourself Throughout this process, it is essential that you take time out to reward yourself for your accomplishments. It is important to celebrate your successes every step of the way, even if it is only a small step. All progress is progress! This will increase your motivation and your momentum. Remember, this is about the journey as much as it is about the end goal. If all you do is worry about the future, you will burn out. Burnout is experienced when you work too hard, without letting yourself have time to relax and reset. Recognize those little wins because they will keep you going, and they will add to your positive mindset. When you reach a major milestone, it is important to pause and take time to acknowledge it. This reinforces the idea that what you are doing is exciting and important and gives you the chance to reset before the next big push. Setting goals and achieving them is hard work. It is something to be very proud of in your life. Taking the time to recognize yourself and your accomplishments should always be a part of this process. These steps have served me well in my racing life, in my business life, and in my personal life. These are the bits of wisdom I share with clients when they are struggling to meet a personal or financial goal. Taking a quick time out to refocus helps them get back on track. STEP #12: Change is okay Change is an inevitable part of life and re-evaluating your goals to fit your life is essential. You may require an alternative plan if your initial plans are not working out the way they should. Don’t become so focused on your action plan that you lose sight of the end goal. It is good to make changes to your process goals and alter your plan throughout the process. Re-evaluating your goals is a learning process that requires time and patience. Life is change, which is why it is completely normal for your goals to mutate over time with you. If you are not changing your goals out of laziness or lack of motivation, this is a normal part of the process. While looking forward to a big goal can be daunting, looking backward can be more motivating because you will see all the work that you have put in and all the milestones you have already met. STEP #10: Hold yourself accountable The next thing you must focus on is holding yourself accountable throughout this process. This is the part where you stay loyal to your plan, and make sure you are giving it your all. A great way to hold yourself accountable is writing everything down. Doing this will ensure that you know your goals and reviewing them will remind you to stay motivated. Sharing your goals with others who support you, will help hold you accountable. Telling others about your goals should make you feel like you don’t want to let them down. Letting yourself down can sometimes be easier than letting others close to you down. Fessing up to other people that you are not giving something your all is difficult, so accountability to them can be huge. Feedback is critical to improving your performance and increasing your ability to achieve your goals. You only have one perspective, and often others will see things through different lenses. Ask for advice from those you trust, and those who will give you honest feedback. It is critical that you hear the unvarnished truth. Feedback is the cheapest and the most powerful way to gauge how other people perceive your accomplishments. It is an important tool to assess how well you’re meeting your standards. Now it’s time to act on everything you have planned in the previous steps. There is no time like the present. If you start today, you will be a day closer to reaching your goals. If you start right now, you will be hours closer to getting your outcome. You must start somewhere, so dig deep and find the courage and motivation to just go for it! Your goals will never happen if you keep waiting for tomorrow. Stop getting ready to get ready, or as I like to call it, analysis paralysis. Just Do It!! It may seem scary to take that first step, but what do you have to lose? Jump in the deep end and figure things out as you go. You can only do so much planning before you just have to go for it. STEP #7: Delegate parts of your goal! You need to delegate every possible part of your goal that you can delegate. You should only do those things that ONLY you can do. When I was racing, I needed to focus on my conditioning, my diet, my practice, studying my competitors and my racing. Every minute that I spent planning trips or cooking, was a minute that I was stealing from the things that ONLY I could do. Make a list of the tasks that only you can do and then try to find a way to delegate everything else to your support team or people you can pay to do those other tasks for you. Focusing on your gifts and strengths will make them greater and stronger and pay far higher dividends. Delegate EVERYTHING else possible. To help you with those issues, I want to share with you my specific goal setting system to overcome inertia. It doesn’t matter if your goal is to run a marathon or save up enough money to travel around Europe, the process is the same. Once you master it, you will be unstoppable. STEP #6: Is your goal measurable? Are you on track or off track? The next step is ensuring that progress toward your goal is measurable. A great example of a measurable goal was when John F. Kennedy said, “We will put a man on the moon by the end of the decade and return him safely to earth.” There was no question about what success and failure looked like nor was there any wiggle room on the date. We either had landed a human being on the moon and returned them safely to Earth or we had not. Nothing wishy washy there. We had either done that by December 31st, 1969, or we had not. This was a clear goal with measurable outcomes. Along with your written action plan, you’ll want to set benchmarks for yourself. This will ensure that you know whether you are on track or off track throughout your journey. Making sure you can track the progress of your goal is essential for long-term success. Setting milestones and reasonable deadlines for interim steps will help you adjust your pace and intensity and will ensure that you stay on track to your desired timeframe. Making sure that your goal is attainable in your timeframe is also important. Sometimes during the milestone setting process you will discover that sub-parts of your goal will take longer than you thought, and you will choose to change your overall timetable. Giving yourself extra time for learning and encountering the unexpected will ensure that you stay on track and will lower your stress levels. If you get a little off track during this process, it is OK. NASA was off-track more than 98% of the time on the way to the moon. They just kept making little adjustments to get back on track. You’ll do the same. Being off-track on the way is normal if you course correct and get back on track as you go. STEP #5: Have you taken your personal skills assessment? The next step in the process is considering your talents and expertise. Think about what it is going to take to accomplish every step of your goal. Identify your strengths and weaknesses. Determine who else you will need to help you shore up your weaknesses. There is no shame in asking for help. I have had help in every step of my life journey and even right now I meet with my coaches and mentors every week and sometimes daily. I PAY for monthly coaching because I always want to take my business and my life to the next level. There is honor in paying others to help you. It is a sign of strength to know your limitations and seek help to shore them up. You are smart enough to know in what areas you are not an expert, and you can intentionally bring that expertise into your life. You must decide which areas will be easy for you, and which areas you may need help. Getting expert help will allow you to focus on the things you are good at. Taking some things off your plate will also relieve stress and give you time to relax and enjoy the journey. Taking the time to rewind and reflect is necessary.
